Let in Light

Art can let in the light. The sole purpose of this series of large scale color etchings on paper, made from a repeated 20x20 inch etching plate, is to lighten.  With these pieces, Ruth Hamill loosens the gingham pattern employed in much of her work. There, the gingham references home and mother and is strident, straight edged, disciplined, loud.  Here, by Hamill drawing each tiny mark freehand directly on the hard ground of the copper plate, the gingham becomes something lighter. The patterns of this work is adjacent but now deeply personal, corporal, free and imperfect.
